In July 1984, Pete Michaelson and others opened a new intellectual property law firm. After two and a half years with Pennie & Edmonds in New York City and three years as a corporate patent attorney at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Pete decided to give up the multi-hour New York commute for an easy fifteen-minute drive to practice intellectual property law from Red Bank, New Jersey. With communication modalities being what they were, Pete chose to offer clients high quality, cost-effective intellectual property services from a more economical suburban base.

Later, during his first assignment as a Court-appointed expert in patent law in 1991, Pete discovered first hand the cost efficiency and potential of ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) for use in settling technology-based disputes. The backlog of the Federal courts and their limited technical expertise, coupled with a subsequent federal mandate that all judicial districts implement ADR, propelled Pete into action. Today, Pete is an experienced, highly recognized expert in the field of ADR.

Over the years, other individuals have joined us who collectively possess over two hundred years of experience handling patent and intellectual property issues. Their experience encompasses service in law firms, large corporations and as examiners in the United States Patent and Trademark Office handling complex technology across a wide range of subject matters.

The original focus of the firm in 1984 was intellectual property law, primarily directed to patent prosecution involving electronic technology and software. During the ensuing years, Michaelson & Associates built an impressive list of high-tech domestic and international clients, with services expanding to include the field of technology, intellectual property and public utility (interconnection) related ADR. With offices in New Jersey and California, the firm has grown considerably, supported by a highly experienced and efficient clerical staff.
